TEAM HIGHLIGHTS:
The inaugural season in the nation's capital,
while falling just short of a storybook playoff appearance, was
an inarguable success. The Nationals stayed in the hunt for the
National League Wild Card until the season's final week, and
their group of hungry, young players never gave up en route to
an 81-81 record.
Offseason acquisition Jose Guillen proved invaluable, as the
fiery slugger smacked 24 home runs, many in key situations.
After starting slowly following a trade from Colorado,
outfielder Preston Wilson finished the year with a team-leading
90 RBIs. The pitching staff was anchored by workhorse Livan
Hernandez, who again led the Major Leagues in innings pitched
(246 1/3), and the Nationals in wins (15). The biggest key to
Washington's surprising season was closer Chad Cordero, who led
the league in saves with 47.
Despite being owned by Major League Baseball, Frank Robinson got
the most out of his overachieving roster, and even the
last-place finish in the standings shouldn't sour the overall
sense that the team's first season in Washington was above and
beyond expectations.
